Ordered list (item type)

Ordered list item types display content with a list of response option 'tokens' in a 'source well' that must be moved to a 'target well' and arranged in a specific order. The candidate must move all tokens to the target well in the correct order to score the item as correct, or the item can be scored based on the ordering of adjacent pairs of response tokens.

Add item content

*Note: Each content component (the stem or question) contains either text or media and may have a custom label. For example, a text component may be labeled as "Question" or "Stem", and a media component may be labeled as "Media", "Video", or "Audio".
  1. In the Content component* field(s), enter text or upload the required media file type, depending on the item requirements. 
    1. For text components, you can format text or add tables, images, and equations.
      1. If configured for your project, some text components (such as stem and basic response options) can include variables or dynamic text. (These are not available for all item templates or text fields.) View unsupported item typesView unsupported item types

        Variables not supported for:

        • Display
        • External QTI
        • Selectable text
        • Audio capture
        • Audio capture with video 
        • Some custom templates (depends on configurations)

        Dynamic text not supported for:

        • Some custom templates (depends on configurations)
    2. For media components, you will only be able to add the types of media configured for the item type (for example, you may be able to add audio files such as MP3, but not video files such as MP4). 

Add response options in the correct order

  1. In the Response section, enter text in the blank text fields for each response option in the correct order. Note Variables and dynamic text cannot be added to Ordered List response options; however, they can be added to the stem/question.  
  2. Click the Add Option  button to add additional options. 
    1. Note If the Add Option button is not visible, you may have exceeded the maximum number of options and cannot add any more unless another option is removed. 

Choose the presentation order of response options

Specify how the options should be scrambled and presented to candidate.

  1. Select the ordinal numbers from the Presented order drop-down menus for each option. 

Remove response options

  1. To remove a response option, click the Remove Option  button for the desired option.
    1. Note If the Remove Option button is not visible, you may be at the minimum number of options and cannot remove any unless more options are added.

Set item weight

Note Depending on the template settings, you may be able to view or edit item weight. In some cases, you won't have visibility or access to this setting. 
  1. If the template allows you to edit the Item Weight field, input a value other than 1. Any decimal value between 0.001 and 9999 is accepted, with a maximum of four characters including the decimal point.
  2. The total point value for the item is now set (once you save the item). For example, if you input "2", the candidate will earn 2 points when the correct response is submitted during exam delivery. 

How the item is scored

Scoring depends on the configurations defined in the item type template.

  • With Dichotomous scoring, the candidate must move all response tokens to the target well in the exact correct order to score the item as correct and earn points. (The question is scored as either all correct or all incorrect and only the exact correct response is accepted as correct.) Depending on the item template configurations, you may be able to set a different weight for the item.
  • With Relative adjacency scoring, the item is scored based on the relative placement of adjacent response pairs. For example, if the correct order is "1, 2, 3, 4", then 1 must come before 2, 3, and/or 4, 2 must come after 1 but before 3 and/or 4, 3 must come after 1 and/or 2 but before 4, and 4 must come after 1, 2, and/or 3. Therefore, three points are awarded for the response "1, 2, 3, 4" for the relative adjacency of "1, 2", "2, 3", and "3, 4". But only two points are awarded for "1, 4, 2, 3" since 1 does come before 4 ("1, 4"), and 2 does come before 3 ("2, 3"), but 4 does NOT come before 2 ("4, 2").
  • With Absolute adjacency scoring, the item is scored based on the absolute placement of adjacent response pairs. This means each adjacent pair must match their exact positions in the correct sequence. For example, if the correct order is "1, 2, 3, 4", only one point is awarded for the response "1, 4, 2, 3" since only the adjacent pair of "2, 3" is ordered according to the exact-correct sequence. Although 1 does come before 4 in the correct sequence, it is not adjacent to 4 — so the adjacent pair "1, 4" does not earn any points. 
  • No scoring means there is no correct or incorrect answer. This scoring model is used for items such as survey questions or pretest items.
