Inline drag and drop (item type)

Inline drag and drop item types display content with 'targets' (blank spaces or gaps) embedded in the text. Response options are presented as 'tokens', which are individual boxes containing text that the candidate must drag to the correct targets in the stem. The candidate must either drag and drop the correct tokens on all of the targets to earn a correct score for the item, or the candidate will earn points based on the number of correctly placed tokens. 

Add item content

*Note: Each content component (the stem or question) contains either text or media and may have a custom label. For example, a text component may be labeled as "Question" or "Stem", and a media component may be labeled as "Media", "Video", or "Audio".
  1. In the Content component* field(s), enter text or upload the required media file type, depending on the item requirements. 
    1. For text components, you can format text or add tables, images, and equations.
      1. If configured for your project, some text components (such as stem and basic response options) can include variables or dynamic text. (These are not available for all item templates or text fields.) View unsupported item typesView unsupported item types

        Variables not supported for:

        • Display
        • External QTI
        • Selectable text
        • Audio capture
        • Audio capture with video 
        • Some custom templates (depends on configurations)

        Dynamic text not supported for: 

        • Audio capture
        • Audio capture with video

        • Some custom templates (depends on configurations)
    2. For media components, you will only be able to add the types of media configured for the item type (for example, you may be able to add audio files such as MP3, but not video files such as MP4). 

Add response targets

  1. In the Response field, begin entering the text you wish to add (such as a sentence, phrase, or paragraph).
  2. When you arrive at the position where the candidate must enter a response, click the Add Option  button below the Response field. This creates a gap or 'target' in the text where the candidate must drag and drop a token. (You can also add all of the text first and replace words with targets after.) 

Remove response targets

  1. To remove a target from the Response field, place your mouse cursor behind the target and press Backspace or Delete on your keyboard. 

Add and assign response tokens

  1. A list of blank tokens is located under the response. For each target in the response, create a token by selecting the desired target number from the Response drop-down menu and entering the token text in the Token field.  Note Variables and dynamic text cannot be added to response tokens; however, they can be added to the stem/question.    
  2. You can add more tokens than targets (e.g., the response only has three targets but there are six targets to choose from). 

Remove or reorder response tokens

  1. To remove a token, click the Remove Option  button for the desired token. 
  2. To reorder tokens, click the moving handle  and drag the token to the desired location in the list. This changes which order the tokens will be displayed to the candidate from left to right (the token at the top is on the far left, the token on the bottom is on the far right or at the end of the list). 

Set item weight

Note Depending on the template settings, you may be able to view or edit item weight. In some cases, you won't have visibility or access to this setting. 
  1. If the template allows you to edit the Item Weight field, input a value other than 1. Any decimal value between 0.001 and 9999 is accepted, with a maximum of four characters including the decimal point.
  2. The total point value for the item is now set (once you save the item). For example, if you input "2", the candidate will earn 2 points when the correct response is submitted during exam delivery. 

How the item is scored

Scoring depends on the configurations defined in the item type template.

  • With Dichotomous scoring, the candidate must drag and drop the correct tokens on all of the targets to earn a correct score for the item. Depending on the item template configurations, you may be able to set a different weight for the item.
  • No scoring means there is no correct or incorrect answer. This scoring model is used for items such as survey questions or pretest items. 
  • With Multiple option sum imperfect matching, each individual response field is scored independently (correct responses earn points and incorrect responses do not earn points). The candidate will earn points based on the number of correctly placed tokens.
