Add split screen exhibits

Exhibits provide candidates with supplemental information for exam items such as passages, tables, graphs, images, audio, and video. This page describes split screen exhibits, which display content on the same page as other item content. (Pop-up exhibits display content in a pop-up window when a button is clicked.)

Note: Any changes you make to an exhibit will apply to all items that contain the exhibit. If you only want changes to apply to a specific item, you must create a new and separate exhibit for that item.

Add a split screen exhibit

  1. In the item settings panel , click Split screen.
  2. In the Split screen exhibits panel, click inside the text field and select Add a new exhibit or choose a recently edited exhibit if available.
  3. The exhibit is added to the item and is also listed in the Split screen exhibits panel.
    1. Note When you add the exhibit, it is automatically set to In focus. When the exhibit is in focus instead of the question content, the Split screen exhibits panel will be hidden from view. To view the exhibits panel again, click Set as focus in the Question header
  4. Click Save in the lower-right corner of the page.
    1. A newly created exhibit is saved as a separate item and must be advanced through the item review process.
    2. A new exhibit can be added to other items or modified within other items, depending on a user's current assignments.

Note Your project may include multiple templates that can be used for exhibits. For example, some may allow media files or have more than one section for adding text. Click the drop-down item type menu  in the lower-left corner of the page to see if other templates are available.

Add exhibit title and passage

*Note: The "title" and "passage" are the main content of an exhibit excluding the response options—such as text, tables, or media recordings. These fields may have a custom label. For example, "Question" or "Stem" may be used instead of "Title" or "Passage", depending on the item requirements within your project.

  1. Click the Set as focus button in the Exhibit header . (Skip this step if you are already editing the question and not the exhibit.)
  2. In the exhibit editing area, enter the following information in the text fields:
    1. *Title: Enter a title for the exhibit. The title is only displayed to candidates if more than one exhibit is added to an item. Multiple exhibits are shown as tabs in the exhibits panel, and the title is displayed as the label for each tab.
    2. *Passage: Enter text for the exhibit content (e.g., examples, case studies, descriptions, definitions, etc.)

Add tables, images, media, or equations

You can add tables, images, media files, and equations to the exhibit content. View these pages for more information:

If you don't see an option to add media files, check if other templates are available. To check for other templates, make sure the exhibit is set as the focus  and click the item type drop-down menu If you still cannot add media, contact your item bank manager. (Media can only be added to exhibits if a Display item template configured for media is enabled in the project.)

Add more split screen exhibits

If you add more than one exhibit to an item, the exhibits are displayed on screen as tabs during exam delivery. You can choose which exhibit is displayed by default (see Choose the default exhibit) or change the order of exhibit tabs (see Change display order of exhibits).

  1. Click the Set as focus button in the Question header . (Skip this step if you are already editing the question and not the exhibit.)
  2. In the item properties panel , click Split screen.
  3. Click inside the search field and select Add a new exhibit or choose a recently edited exhibit if available.

Change display order of exhibits

If an item contains more than one exhibit, the exhibits are displayed as tabs. You can change the left-to-right order in which exhibit tabs are displayed to candidates.

  1. Click the Set as focus button in the Question header . (Skip this step if you are already editing the question and not the exhibit.)
  2. In the item settings panel , click Split screen.
  3. Under Available Exhibits, click and drag the handles next to the exhibit name to rearrange them.

The top-to-bottom order will translate to a left-to-right order in the Exhibits panel displayed to candidates. (The exhibit at the top of the list will be displayed on the far left while the exhibit at the bottom of the list will display on the far right.)

Set split screen properties

Choose where exhibits are placed in relation to the question content (orientation) or how much space the exhibits will occupy on the screen (ratio).

  1. Click the Set as focus button in the Question header . (Skip this step if you are already editing the question and not the exhibit.)
  2. In the item settings panel , click Split screen.
  3. Click Set split screen properties.
  4. From the Orientation drop-down menu, choose an option to determine where the exhibit content will be displayed during exam delivery in relation to the question content. (For example, selecting "Left" places exhibit content on the left side of the screen and the question content on the right side.) Note: the orientation will only be reflected when you preview the item. When editing the item, exhibit content is always shown to the left of the question content.
  5. In the Ratio field, enter a value between 0 and 1 up to one decimal place (e.g., "0.5" not "0.55") or use the arrows to set the ratio of exhibit to question content in terms of screen space. (For example, entering "0.4" sets the exhibit content to occupy 40% of the screen and the question content to occupy 60%.)
  6. Click Apply

Switch between exhibits when editing

If the item contains more than one exhibit, only one is displayed at a time for editing. Use the drop-down menu to switch between exhibits.

  1. Make sure the exhibit is set as the focus (or click the Set as focus button in the Exhibit header ).
  2. Use the drop-down menu in the exhibit header to select which exhibit you wish to edit.

Remove an exhibit

  1. Click the Set as focus button in the Question header . (Skip this step if you are already editing the question and not the exhibit.)
  2. In the Split screen exhibits panel, click the delete  button next to the exhibit that you want to delete.
  3. Click Yes in the confirmation pop-up.

Preview item with exhibits

Preview how the exhibit will appear alongside item content during exam delivery. This allows you to verify the size, order, and display or exhibit content and assets.

Note Items with media can only be previewed if the media files are hosted in the Media Content Deployer application and an Item preview template is used where embedURI = false and the correct folder path of the files in Media Content Deployer is specified.

  1. In the lower right corner, click More > Preview
  2. A preview of the exhibit will open in a new tab. The preview is displayed with the Exam Preview application and shows how the exhibit and item content will be displayed to candidates during exam delivery.
