Workspace (item type template)

This page describes the configurations for the Workspace  item type template.

Note If new options have been added to this template since you last updated it, a notification is displayed to authors indicating that the template has not been updated. This notification will be displayed in Authoring until you enable or disable any new options and save the changes.

Important note: A Display item type must also be configured and enabled for the project in order to author new Workspace items.

Workspace tab

Set the number of exhibit groups, the label and colors for each exhibit group, and the properties for the default split-screen exhibit. Determine if authors can change certain properties of the item template.

Field

Description

Exhibit groups

The number of exhibit groups enabled for the item type. (An 'exhibit group' is a visually distinct area containing one or more pop-up exhibits.)

  • Note No more than three exhibit groups are allowed per item.
  • Note The number of groups you select determines how many "Exhibit group" tabs are added. For example, if you select 2 exhibit groups, an Exhibit group 1 and Exhibit group 2 tab will be added to the template.
Exhibit group label

The label for the exhibit group that will be displayed to the candidate during delivery.

  • Note You must add a label for each exhibit group. For example, if you add two exhibit groups to the template, you'll see an Exhibit group 1 label and  Exhibit group 2 label.
Background color, Border color

Optionally, you can set a Background color and Border color to visually separate each exhibit group. This is not required; the default colors are white.

In the left text box field, enter a hex color number or click the color swatch to select a color or enter RGB values.

  • Background color: This changes the background color of the exhibit group area.
  • Border color: This changes the color of the border that outlines the exhibit group area.

Response label

The label for the response area that will be displayed to the candidate during delivery. The response area contains buttons for the Spreadsheet and/or Essay responses that candidates are required to submit.

Split screen properties

Specify the properties for the default split screen exhibit panel.

  • Note A Workspace item template is divided into two side-by-side panels: one for the default split screen exhibit panel, and one for the question panel that contains the exhibit groups and response area.

Split screen properties

Note Authors can change these properties at the item level in the Authoring application.

  • Orientation: Determines which side of the screen will contain the default split screen exhibit. For example, "Left" places the default split screen exhibit on the left side of the screen and the exhibit groups/response area on the right side.
  • Ratio: Determines how much screen space the default split screen exhibit will occupy (i.e., the ratio of exhibit content to the exhibit groups/response area in terms of screen space). Enter a value between 0 and 1 up to one decimal place (e.g., "0.5" not "0.55") or use the arrows to set the default ratio. For example, "0.4" sets the default split screen exhibit to occupy 50% of the screen and the exhibit groups/response area to occupy 60%.
  • Adjustable: Determines if the candidate can click and drag to adjust the size of the split screen exhibit area. (True = candidates can adjust the size of the split-screen exhibit display.)
  • Require complete exhibit display: Determines if the candidate is required to view the entire contents of the exhibit before proceeding to the next item. (True = candidates must view all contents of the exhibit, including any required scrolling, in order to proceed to the next item.)
Dynamic text allowed in content components

Specifies whether authors can insert predefined scripts in the text components of items. When an item contains dynamic text, the content changes dynamically during exam delivery based on the script. For example, you might have dynamic content in question stems or multiple choice response options, or on display screens such as exam intros.

  • Yes: Authors can insert dynamic text in certain text components (such as the item stem).
  • No: Authors cannot insert dynamic text anywhere in the item.
Enable item writer setting override

Specify Yes if authors should be allowed to change the properties listed below. This adds multiple Settings buttons  to the item template in Authoring that allow authors to change these properties at the item level.

  • Exhibit group label, background color, and border color
  • Exhibit group button and window properties
  • Response area label, background color, and border color
  • Essay response button and window properties
  • Essay response properties
  • Spreadsheet response button and window properties
  • Spreadsheet response properties

If No is selected, the Settings buttons  will be hidden from authors.

Choose button and window properties for each exhibit group. A separate tab will be added based on the number of exhibit groups you selected on the Workspace tab ↑.
