This page describes the configurations for the Essay  item type template.

Note If new options have been added to this template since you last updated it, a notification is displayed to authors indicating that the template has not been updated. This notification will be displayed in Authoring until you enable or disable any new options and save the changes.

Authoring tab

Set the number and type of content components (including the number of essay response fields), and indicate if initial responses can be added by the item author.

Field

Description

Content components

The number of content components enabled for the item type. A 'content component' is a distinct area containing text and images (such as the question or stem), media files (such as audio and video), or an essay response field.

  • The order of content components in the template is the order in which they will display to candidates.
  • Authors are required to add content to Text components, but are only required to add content to Media components if the validation is enabled on the Media properties tab. (Validations are enforced upon submit, not save.)
  • A content component can also be used as an essay response field. This allows you to collect more than one essay response in the same item.
    • For example, to enable two responses, you could add four content components where Component 1 is a text component (the first question), Component 2 is the first essay response field, Component 3 is another text component (the second question), and Component 4 is the second essay response. Another example would be to use Component 1 as the only text component and Components 2 and 3 as essay response components.
Content label

The content component label and the type of content to be provided (text or media).

  • Content label: acts as a header for the content section so the author knows what content to add (such as "Introduction", "Question", "Video", "Response" etc.).   This label is NOT shown to candidates during test delivery.
  • Type (Text, Media, or Essay response): indicates what type of content is allowed for that component. Text components can include text or images. Media components can be configured for audio, video, or both. Essay response components provide a response area for candidates to enter essay responses.
    • Note Authors can only add one media file per Media component. If multiple media files are required, you must add multiple Media components to the template.
Enable initial response

Determines if authors can add initial responses for each response component in the item. (An 'initial response' is text that is initially included in the essay response box when the candidate views the item during exam delivery. The candidate can delete the initial response text and add their own response.)

  • Yes: authors have the option to add initial responses for each Essay response component. Response components will be displayed as text boxes where an initial response can be added.
  • No: authors do not have the option to add initial responses for Essay response components. Placeholder text ("Essay response will appear here") is shown instead of a text box.
  • Note Initial responses are either enabled or disabled for all Essay response components in a given item, but each can have a different initial response. If enabled, authors also have the option to add an initial response for some components but not others.
Enable item level override of essay response settings

Determines if authors can change the essay response properties ↓ at the item level.

  • Yes: authors are allowed to override the default essay response properties on individual items created from this item type. A properties button is available when authoring items that use this template, which opens the editable essay response properties.
  • No: authors must use the default essay response settings defined at the template level and cannot override them on individual items.
Customize response identifier on the item

Allows authors to customize response identifiers on individual items. This helps identify individual responses within items that collect multiple responses from candidates.

Note:  This field must be enabled/set to Yes when migrating legacy Essay items with custom response idents to Authoring projects.

  • Yes: When enabled, an editable Response ID field is available when authoring items that use this template. Authors can input a custom response identifier using alphanumeric characters, underscores, or hyphens (no other special characters are permitted).
  • No: When disabled, the Response ID field is hidden/not shown to authors and default system-generated response identifiers will be used.
Dynamic text allowed in content components

Specifies whether authors can insert predefined scripts in the text components of items. When an item contains dynamic text, the content changes dynamically during exam delivery based on the script. For example, you might have dynamic content in question stems or multiple choice response options, or on display screens such as exam intros.

  • Yes: Authors can insert dynamic text in certain text components (such as the item stem).
  • No: Authors cannot insert dynamic text anywhere in the item.

Delivery tab

Choose scoring rules for the essay response.

Field

Description

Scoring rules

The scoring rule that will be used to score the item.

  • No scoring (no correct answer): There is no 'correct' or 'incorrect' response. Points are neither given nor taken away. This scoring rule is often used for pretest or survey items.
  • External scoring (Manual scoring, evaluated by a human): A human, not a machine, will score the response from the exam results file. No scoring is applied at the time of exam delivery and no response processing is exported with the QTI. This is not the same as "No scoring" since the item will be scored, just not at the time of exam delivery. Weighted scoring can be applied at the item level (the item can be worth some value other than 1)—any decimal value between 0.001 and 9999 is accepted.
  • Polytomous - Unique word list matching (Marks are awarded for each correct word in the correct response list): Candidates will earn one point for each instance of a word designated in the correct response list. If this scoring type is used, authors will be required to add a "correct response list".  Note This rule cannot be used if more than one Essay response component has been added to the template on the Authoring tab ↑.
  • Dichotomous - Unique word list matching (Marks are awarded when all words in the correct response list are used): Candidates will only earn the allotted points for the item if all words designated in the correct response list are used in their response. If this scoring type is used, authors will be required to add a "correct response list". Note This rule cannot be used if more than one Essay response component has been added to the template on the Authoring tab ↑. Weighted scoring can be applied at the item level (the item can be worth some value other than 1) when the following options are configured:
    • Default weight: Set the total possible point value for the item. The default is 1, but you can input another value such as 2, which would award 2 points if the candidate submits the correct response. Any decimal value between 0.001 and 9999 is accepted.
    • Enable item writer to override weight: Select Yes to allow authors to change the default weight of hte item. (An editable Item Weight field will be displayed when authoring the item.) Select No to prevent authors from changing the item weight. (The Item Weight field will not be shown when authoring items.)
